Film Night – The Bookshop

It is 1959, and widowed Florence Green (Emily Mortimer) risks everything to open up a bookshop in the sleepy seaside town of Hardborough. When she exposes the narrow minded townsfolk to the best literature of the day including Nabokov’s scandalizing “Lolita” and Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451”, she gains a kindred spirit and ally in the figure of Mr Brundish (Bill Nighy), who is himself sick of the town’s stale atmosphere, but has to reckon with the hostility of the other shopkeepers and of self-appointed doyenne Mrs Gamart (Patricia Clarkson).

“Courage is the central theme of this delightful film about books, passion and dreams. . . Lovers of books and admirers of determination will embrace this enchanting film. I hope you will enjoy it, too.” Urban Cinefile

U3A Monthly Meet

The University of the Third Age (U3A) is a “self-help, self-managed community co-operative” dedicated to lifelong learning for those of us in our Third Age.We define the Third Age as the period after the First Age of childhood dependences, and the Second Age of full- time employment and parenthood . It follows that there is no lower or upper limit on the age at which you can join U3A.
U3A meet on the second Thursday of each month at the Memorial Hall. There is a speaker and time beforehand to meet friends and book outings etc. Afterwards enjoy a free cup of tea or coffee and more chat. If you are new or considering joining come along and make yourself known to a committee member (wearing a yellow sash) and you will be introduced to someone who will look after you. There is a charge of £1 for attendance to cover all the costs of the afternoon. Doors open 1.15pm – speaker 2.00pm.
